The circumstance of the disaster is not known. The last record of her movement was taken on September 7 1883, but some accounts believe she sunk in 1899.

The wreck of the John Walters is located in the shallow, narrow channel running between the southwest tip of Russel Island and a small barren island.
The site is generally in protected waters (depending on the wind) and is a good snorkelling location. The most interesting item is the centreboard box. The rock formations around the wreck are also interesting, showing erosion patterns typical for the area.
